SEO in Durban, from Umhlanga to Amanzimtoti

On 22 October 2026, all ten ordinary Google results for "guest house durban" were booking sites or directories. Not one was a guest house's own website. That search gets 5,400 a month in Semrush's South African figures, the most of any trade search we checked in Durban, so the first job is working out which searches a business can win with its own site and which it reaches through listings.

Kilter works from Cape Town and has no office in KwaZulu-Natal. You'll talk to the people doing the work. There's no account manager passing messages along. Those conversations run over video calls and email, and a Durban business pays what a Cape Town one does.

Searches from Durban and Umhlanga

Monthly figures from Semrush's South African database. It had no figures for SEO phrases naming Umhlanga, so the SEO table counts Durban phrases only.

Two Durban searches, checked on 22 October 2026

Checked signed out on google.com, with the country set to South Africa and the language to English. The browser was in the Western Cape, which mattered little here, because neither search showed a map.

For "seo durban"

No map pack, no AI Overview and no ads. Of the nine ordinary results, two were directories or ranking sites, six were agency websites, one of them a blog list of ten agencies, and one was an agency's LinkedIn page. With no map on the page, the ordinary results were the whole of it.

For "guest house durban"

No map pack and no AI Overview, but three ads above the results. All ten ordinary results were booking sites or directories, and no guest house's own website made page one.

What that means for a Durban business

A guest house won't take the broad search from the booking sites with its own website, so the work goes into its listings on those sites, its Business Profile, and narrower searches where its own page can compete, such as one naming a suburb or a beach.

Maps across eThekwini

The metro runs from Umhlanga in the north to Amanzimtoti in the south, and inland along the N3 to Pinetown. Map results favour businesses close to the person searching, so a business competes on the map mainly near its own address.

Umhlanga is searched by name

"restaurants umhlanga" gets 2,400 searches a month, "guest house umhlanga" 1,600 and "dentist umhlanga" 1,000 (Semrush, 22 October 2026). A business there should name Umhlanga on a page of its own and in its Business Profile instead of filing itself under Durban.

Inland along the N3

Westville and Pinetown have customers of their own, and a business in either competes on the map with its neighbours, not with the beachfront. If you take work on the coast and inland, the site needs a page for each, written about the jobs you do there.

Service areas are for the trades, not the guest houses

A guest house or restaurant has no use for service areas, because its customers come to it and its address does the work. They matter for the businesses that drive out, and in Durban those are searched too: "plumber durban" gets 720 searches a month and "security companies durban" 320 (Semrush, 22 October 2026). For a security company based in Westville whose patrols reach Pinetown and Durban North, those two go on its Business Profile, out of the 20 that Google's help page allowed when we read it on 22 October 2026. Amanzimtoti stays off if nobody will drive that far south for a callout.

When a Durban search shows a map

Neither search we checked on 22 October 2026 showed a map, so for those our view from the Western Cape was the same as anyone's. Your own searches may bring one up. Before planning around it, we run them from a grid of points along the coast from Umhlanga to Amanzimtoti and inland to Pinetown, and if a map appears, your report tracks that grid every month.

What SEO costs in KwaZulu-Natal

Agencies based in KwaZulu-Natal charge less than the national middle at entry level. Of the 6 in our check that publish prices, the middle entry-level retainer is R3,250 a month, in a range of R2,490 to R7,500, against R4,675 across all 34 agencies nationally.

Mid-tier prices from 5 of them have a middle of R6,500. The 5 that publish a top tier have a middle of R15,999, level with the national middle.

(Kilter's check of published SEO price lists, 19 October 2026: 6 KwaZulu-Natal agencies)

Where our prices fall

We cost more than the KwaZulu-Natal middle at every tier. Local, at R7,500, matches the dearest entry-level price we found in the province. Regional, at R12,500, is almost twice the R6,500 mid-tier middle, and National, at R18,500, is above the R15,999 top-tier middle.

How a Durban business works with us

Kilter has no office in KwaZulu-Natal, so a Durban client works with us from the other side of the country. These are the parts that differ for a business in eThekwini.

A first call: coast, inland or both

The first video call is spent over a map of the metro: whether your customers are up the coast towards Umhlanga, south towards Amanzimtoti, or inland along the N3 in Westville and Pinetown. A business with customers on the coast and inland gets a page for each, and that call decides which one we write first.

Changes timed around your busy weeks

If you run a guest house or restaurant whose busiest weeks are the December holidays, new pages and listing changes go live before then, and nothing risky goes up mid-season. A plumber or builder has a flatter year, so the order of work follows the searches instead.

Reports that include your listings

The monthly report arrives by email, and we talk it through on a video call afterwards. For a guest house it covers your booking-site and directory listings as well as your own site, because on 22 October 2026 those sites held all ten ordinary results for "guest house durban". For other businesses it shows where you appear in the searches we track, coast and inland apart.

Our prices, and what only you know

Our packages cost a Durban business exactly what they cost in Cape Town, from R7,500 a month, with nothing added for travel. What we can't price in is local knowledge: the beach, mall or landmark customers give directions by, and the parts of the metro you'd rather not drive to. None of that shows from Cape Town, so we ask.

Durban industries with big search numbers

Guest houses, construction companies and private schools had three of the four largest trade searches we checked in Durban on 22 October 2026. These industry pages explain how we'd run SEO for each.

"guest house durban" gets 5,400 searches a month and "guest house umhlanga" 1,600 (Semrush, 22 October 2026), and booking sites held all ten ordinary results for the first. Your listings and Business Profile come before your own pages.

"construction companies durban" gets 1,600 searches a month (Semrush, 22 October 2026). Buyers want past projects and the kind of work you take on, so each service gets a page with real jobs on it.

"private schools durban" gets 1,300 searches a month (Semrush, 22 October 2026). Parents compare fees, phases and transport, so the pages answer those before the open day.

2,469 independent schools in 2024, up from 2,282 in 2022 (DBE, School Realities 2024 and 2022).

Our prices are on the site

Durban questions

No. Our team is in Cape Town, and clients in Umhlanga, central Durban and the rest of KwaZulu-Natal meet us on video calls. For a guest house, much of the work is in booking-site listings and a Business Profile, which can be edited from anywhere. Photos of the rooms, the pool and the street outside are better taken by you, so we'll ask for those.

No, it's cheaper. In our check of published price lists on 19 October 2026, the middle entry-level retainer among 6 KwaZulu-Natal agencies was R3,250 a month, against R4,675 nationally. Our Local package, at R7,500, matches the dearest entry-level price we found there.

If its customers come from Umhlanga, yes. People search Umhlanga by name, with 2,400 searches a month for restaurants there and 1,000 for dentists (Semrush, 22 October 2026). A page that names Umhlanga and describes the business there is written for those searches, and a general Durban page isn't.

It depends on the search. On 22 October 2026, neither "seo durban" nor "guest house durban" showed a map pack, so for those the ordinary results were what counted. We check your own searches first and put the effort where a map shows up.
