AI SEO: getting named when people ask AI assistants who to use

AI SEO is the work of getting your business named when someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation. You'll also see it called GEO, short for generative engine optimisation (generative engine optimization in American spelling), or AEO, for answer engine optimisation. Ask an assistant "which accountant in Bellville handles small-business tax?" and the answer is usually a short list of names, with no page of ten links to scroll through. ChatGPT has more than 1 billion weekly active users (OpenAI, August 2026), and Google said in June 2026 that AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion users a month.

We cover ten AI platforms: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, Meta AI, Grok and DeepSeek. Every plan tracks the first six daily, Growth and Scale add Claude, and on those two plans Meta AI, Grok and DeepSeek are checked by hand each month. Then we work on the sources they draw from: your own pages on every plan, and on Growth and Scale your Business Profile and the directories and review sites they cite. Nobody can make an assistant name a business, and the answers change from day to day, so we track the same prompts the same way and show you which way it's moving.

In South Africa, ChatGPT sends 80% of the clicks that AI chatbots send to websites. Gemini sends 8.7%, Microsoft Copilot 6.2%, Perplexity 3.7% and Claude 1.1% (StatCounter, South Africa, September 2026).

From R5,500 a month.

What AI search work includes

Asked about local businesses, an assistant can search the web first and write its answer from what it finds. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run more than one search for a single question (checked October 2026). So this sits on top of SEO, and parts of it will look familiar.

The prompt list

We write down the questions your buyers would ask, such as "best conveyancing attorney in Durbanville" or "which broker can help with medical aid for chronic medication", and agree them with you. These are your prompts: 15 on Starter, 30 on Growth and 60 on Scale, each tracked daily on the platforms your plan tracks, 6 on Starter and 7 on Growth and Scale. On Growth and Scale, Meta AI, Grok and DeepSeek are also checked by hand each month on your top 10 or top 20 prompts.

Answers on your own pages

Plain statements of what you charge, where you work, who you're for and how long things take. In a study presented at KDD 2024 (Aggarwal et al.), adding statistics, quotations and cited sources to test pages raised their visibility in generated answers by up to 40%, on the researchers' own benchmark of 10,000 queries.

Listings that agree

For local questions, the assistants often lean on listings: your Google Business Profile, and whichever directories and review sites they find. On Growth and Scale, we make your name, address, number, services and hours match on your Business Profile and on the listings the tracking shows them citing.

Mentions on other sites

The tracking shows which outside sites the assistants cite for your prompts, whether that's an industry body, a news site or a comparison article. Every one goes in the report. Where it's a directory or review site that lists your competitors and leaves you out, getting you on it is part of the listings work on Growth and Scale, and on Scale we also go after mentions on the South African sites AI tools cite.

Crawler access

Cloudflare started blocking AI crawlers by default for new domains in July 2025, and a Vercel study in December 2024 found that the crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity didn't run JavaScript. In every plan's first month we check that your firewall and robots.txt let the right crawlers in, and that your prices, areas and services are written into the page's HTML, where those crawlers can read them.

How we measure AI visibility

The same question can get a different answer tomorrow, so one screenshot proves nothing. We track the same prompts, worded the same way, every day on the platforms your plan tracks, and report the pattern each month.

Named or not

For each prompt and platform: whether you were named, where in the answer, and whether what it said about you was right.

Sources cited

Which sites each answer linked to or quoted. If a competitor's directory listing keeps being cited and you have no listing there, the report says so, and on Growth and Scale getting you listed goes on next month's list.

AI referral visits

Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com, taken from GA4. This undercounts, because someone who reads your name in an answer may phone you or search for you instead of clicking.

Google's AI features

Since 31 August 2026, Search Console's generative AI performance report has been open to every site. It shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and which pages, but it counts impressions only. Clicks from those features still sit inside ordinary organic search, in Search Console and GA4, and our report says so.

Enquiries and cost per enquiry

Calls, forms and WhatsApps from AI referrals, next to your other sources, with our fee divided by the enquiries. Adding "An AI assistant" to the "How did you hear about us?" options on your form picks up people who came in another way.

What changes next month

Two or three jobs for the coming month, picked from the sources the assistants relied on most.

Your first 90 days

  1. Step Month 1: The baseline

We agree the prompt list with you and start tracking it. Every plan's first month also covers an AI crawler access check, Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow, schema, llms.txt and a baseline report. GA4 gets its own channel for AI referrals, so visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com stop hiding under "referral".

  2. Step Month 2: Pages and listings

We rework your existing pages with plain answers, starting with the baseline prompts where the assistants left you out or got you wrong. If an assistant says something wrong about you, we look for the source it came from, and if that's your site, we correct it. On Growth and Scale we also correct listings where your details don't match, including any an assistant got wrong.

  3. Step Month 3: Missing listings and the comparison

On Growth and Scale, we start on the directories and review sites the assistants cite that don't list you yet, and on Scale the outreach for mentions begins. The month 3 report puts each answer next to its month 1 version, so you can see what moved and what didn't.

AI search plans

The plans differ in how many prompts we track and on which platforms, how many competitors we watch and how much we write. Every plan's first month covers an AI crawler access check, Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow, schema, llms.txt and a baseline report, and you don't need the paid audit to start one.

Questions about the plans and the audit

Every plan tracks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity daily. Growth and Scale also track Claude daily, and check Meta AI, Grok and DeepSeek by hand each month: on your top 10 prompts on Growth and your top 20 on Scale. The AI search audit covers all ten.

Because it isn't the only place your buyers ask. In South Africa, ChatGPT sends 80% of the clicks that AI chatbots send to websites, and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Claude send most of the rest (StatCounter, South Africa, September 2026). Those figures count chatbots. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode answer inside Google Search itself, so we track them as well. Each platform can give a different answer to the same question, so tracking one tells you little about the others.

The free audit is a first look: how you show up on Google and Google Maps, a quick AI check of 5 prompts in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, and the five fixes we'd make first, within 3 working days. The AI search audit costs R4,950. It tests 30 prompts on 10 platforms, with Meta AI, Grok and DeepSeek checked by hand on the top 10, against up to 3 competitors, and comes with a technical check, the list of sources AI tools cite for your topics, a written report, a 90-day plan and a call, within 5 working days of payment.

AI search by industry

A parent choosing a school asks an assistant different questions from a business owner looking for an accountant. Each industry page covers how buyers in that sector look for a provider, on Google and in AI answers.

A small practice won't outrank the national firms for "accountant". It can win "tax practitioner near me", where Google shows a Maps pack above the results and the nearest well-reviewed practice gets the call.

4,776 SAICA members and associates work as sole practitioners or partners (SAICA, August 2026).

Rule 18.22 of the LPC Code of Conduct treats paying for referrals as touting, which rules out most pay-per-lead schemes. So we build your own flow of enquiries from search, Maps and pages that answer what people ask before they phone an attorney.

2,241 South African law firms have between two and nine attorneys (LSSA statistics, 2026).

We use the words parents search with, "private schools" rather than "independent schools", and time campaigns to your enrolment dates.

2,469 independent schools in 2024, up from 2,282 in 2022 (DBE, School Realities 2024 and 2022).

Patients look for a GP or a specialist near home or work. We build pages and Google Business Profiles for each practitioner and location, and trace each appointment request to the search or ad behind it.

53,773 medical practitioners held active HPCSA registration in March 2024 (HPCSA Annual Report 2023/24).

A search for "dentist near me" puts a map of three practices above the websites. We work on the parts of that choice you can influence: your Business Profile, your reviews and your treatment pages.

6,866 dentists held active HPCSA registration in March 2024 (HPCSA Annual Report 2023/24).

Plumbers, electricians and pest control companies get hired from searches made in a hurry, like "plumber near me" with water on the floor. We set up your Business Profile for the areas you cover, build a page per service and area, and track every call.

Online shops sell through product and category pages. We fix what stops Google indexing them, write the category pages people search for, and run Meta ads from your product catalogue, reported by revenue and return on ad spend.

Questions about AI search

No. Nobody outside the companies that make them, such as OpenAI, Google and Microsoft, controls what the assistants say, and the same question can get a different answer tomorrow. We work on what the assistants read and report each month how often you're named.

They overlap. Google says a page has to be in its index to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes runs its searches through other search providers (both checked October 2026). Two things differ. We measure whether you're named in an answer, where SEO measures position on a page. And assistants cite directories, review sites and articles that may never reach page one, so we track every source they cite, and on Growth and Scale we put more of the effort into your listings.

Only if you'd rather stay out of AI answers. OpenAI says blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search answers, while blocking GPTBot only stops your content being used for training. Google says its Google-Extended setting doesn't affect Google Search, and AI Overviews are part of Search (both checked October 2026).

Where the assistant searches the web as it answers, as Perplexity and AI Overviews do, the answer can change within weeks of a page or listing changing. What a model learned in training changes only when it's retrained, on the model maker's schedule. The daily tracking shows which kind you're dealing with.

If your site has technical problems or no page for what you sell, yes, because the assistants read the same site Google does. If your site's basics are sound, AI search can run on its own, without monthly SEO. Plans start at R5,500 a month.
